Does “First and Last” Prove Jesus Is God?
A Muslim Response to Common Christian Claims
Many Christians sincerely believe that certain Bible verses prove Jesus claimed to be God — especially verses that say:
👉 “I am the First and the Last.”
Recently, a Christian speaker argued in a viral video that this phrase — used in the Book of Revelation — is also found in the Qur’an as one of Allah’s Names, and therefore must “prove” Jesus’ divinity.
Let’s take a closer look — with truth, clarity, and respect. 🌷
📖 The Phrase “First and Last” in the Bible and Qur’an
In the Bible:
✅ Isaiah 44:6 — God (Yahweh) says:
👉 “I am the First and I am the Last; apart from me there is no God.”
✅ Revelation 1:17–18 (a vision seen by John) claims Jesus says:
👉 “I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever!”
In the Qur’an:
✅ “He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing.”
(Qur’an 57:3)
So does this prove Jesus is God?
The answer is no — and here is why:
🚩 1️⃣ Revelation Is a Vision — Not Jesus’ Earthly Words
The Book of Revelation was written decades after Jesus’ earthly life — as a symbolic vision seen by John.
It is not one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), and it does not record Jesus’ direct teachings during his life on earth.
Muslims — and historically aware Christians — know that Revelation is a controversial, symbolic book, not a record of Jesus’ words.
🚩 2️⃣ “First and Last” Does Not Equal Divine Essence
In Semitic language, “first” and “last” can mean:
✅ First in rank
✅ Last in succession
✅ Someone with an eternal message
It is not proof of divine essence.
In fact, the verse in Revelation 1:18 says:
👉 “I was dead, but now I am alive forever.”
This disqualifies this being from being Almighty God — because:
✨ Allah (SWT) is Al-Hayy — the Ever-Living — who never dies.
Death cannot touch Him.
🚩 3️⃣ The Qur’an Is Clear: Allah Alone Is the First and the Last
In the Qur’an, Al-Awwal wal-Aakhir — the First and the Last — describes Allah’s eternal, uncreated nature:
✨ No beginning.
✨ No end.
✨ Not born.
✨ Never dies.
✨ The Creator of all that exists.
Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) — like all prophets — was created by Allah:
✅ Born of Maryam (Mary) — miraculously.
✅ Not killed or crucified — but raised up by Allah:
👉 “They did not kill him, nor crucify him — but it was made to appear so.” (Qur’an 4:157)
✅ Will return by Allah’s permission — as part of the Last Day signs.
🌷 A Final Reflection for Christians and Truth Seekers
As Muslims, we love and honor Jesus (peace be upon him):
✅ We believe in his miraculous birth.
✅ We believe in his prophethood.
✅ We believe he will return.
✅ We do not believe he is God — nor the literal son of God.
We worship the One who created Jesus — the same One who created us all:
✨ The eternal, uncreated God — Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth.
When we look carefully:
✅ There is no contradiction in the Qur’an.
✅ But there are many later additions and distortions in today’s versions of the Bible.
I invite you to read the Qur’an with an open heart — and see the beautiful truth preserved by Allah.

👉 “Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One.
Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
He neither begets nor is born,
Nor is there to Him any equivalent.’”
(Qur’an 112:1–4)
