Why Muslims Don't Call God Father

Why Muslims don’t call God “Father” is a question I often hear — especially as a Muslim revert. It’s one of the many thoughtful questions my Christian family and friends have asked over the years.

It’s an understandable question — one that deserves a clear and thoughtful answer.

In Islam, we understand Allah (the One true God) as the Creator, Sustainer, and Master of the universe. We approach Him with deep love, awe, and reverence — but also with the understanding that He is completely unlike His creation.

The language of “father” implies something human — a created relationship, shaped by our worldly experiences. While God loves His creation and cares for us with infinite mercy and compassion, He is not to be limited by human terms.

In the Qur’an, Allah tells us:

“…There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
(Surah Ash-Shura 42:11)

By calling upon Allah with His names and attributes as revealed — such as Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful), Ar-Razzaq (The Provider), Al-Ghaffar (The Forgiving) — we honor the truth of His nature and avoid the danger of shaping God into a human image.

This is part of the beauty of Tawheed — the pure monotheism at the heart of Islam. We worship Allah alone, without partners, without likeness, and without giving Him human characteristics.

So, why Muslims don’t call God “Father” becomes clear when we reflect on this principle. We do not ascribe human traits to the Divine — rather, we honor Allah with the names and attributes He revealed.

Understanding this helps us explain Islam clearly to others — especially those from Christian backgrounds. By using the names and attributes of Allah as revealed in the Qur’an, we keep our worship pure and avoid creating misunderstandings about God’s nature.

And that, in truth, brings the heart even closer to Him.
