ٱلْمُتَكَبِّر — Al-Mutakabbir — The Supremely Great, The Majestic One

Sometimes, Allah leads our hearts toward a Name we weren’t looking for.
I set out to reflect on Ar-Razzāq — The Provider, the One who sustains every soul — but before I could arrive there, I stumbled upon Al-Mutakabbir.
And I realized, perhaps I wasn’t meant to reflect on provision before first understanding the One who provides.
1. The Essence of Divine Greatness
The root of Al-Mutakabbir — ك-ب-ر (k-b-r) — means greatness, vastness, magnificence.
When we say Allāhu Akbar (الله أكبر), we are proclaiming the same truth contained in this Name:
Allah is Greater.
Not greater than something — but Greatness Itself.
All the power, beauty, intelligence, and abundance in creation are only dim reflections of His infinite greatness. When we truly know this, we stop chasing greatness for ourselves and instead seek nearness to the Great One.
2. Why Only Allah Can Claim Pride
In human hearts, pride (kibr) corrupts. It says, “I am something on my own.”
But in truth, we own nothing, control nothing, and sustain nothing. Every breath, every heartbeat, every idea — they are gifts, not achievements.
Allah’s Kibriyāʾ (Majesty) is pure and rightful because it is not borrowed.
His greatness does not depend on creation. It is eternal, absolute, and untainted by need or deficiency.
To reflect on Al-Mutakabbir is to remember that greatness belongs only to Him — and that humility before His greatness is not self-deprecation, but truth.
3. The Veil of Arrogance
Allah says:
“I shall turn away from My signs those who behave arrogantly upon the earth without right.”
— Surah Al-Aʿrāf 7:146
Arrogance is a blindness. It closes the heart to Divine wisdom.
When pride settles in, we stop seeing Allah’s signs in our lives.
Humility, then, is not weakness — it is sight. The more we bow, the clearer we see.
4. From Majesty to Mercy: The Bridge to Ar-Razzāq
Understanding Al-Mutakabbir prepares the heart for Ar-Razzāq.
The One who is infinitely Great has no need to give — yet He gives endlessly.
He provides because of mercy, not obligation.
When we stand in awe of His Majesty, we learn to trust His Provision.
We stop demanding why or how and begin whispering Alḥamdulillāh for what is.
You cannot fully receive from Ar-Razzāq until you have bowed before Al-Mutakabbir.
5. Heart Reflection
“O Al-Mutakabbir, You are Great beyond measure, beyond likeness, beyond comprehension.
Teach my heart to bow before Your greatness so pride and blindness never dwell within me.
When I am tempted to claim strength or control, remind me that all greatness is Yours alone.
Make me content to be small before You — because in that smallness lies peace, clarity, and true freedom.”
Closing Thought
Before Allah teaches us that He provides, He often teaches us Who He is.
Before we understand His generosity, He allows us to taste our dependency.
And before He fills our hands, He humbles our hearts.
Because to truly recognize Ar-Razzāq, we must first kneel before Al-Mutakabbir.
May Allah, the Supremely Great, make our hearts gentle before His Majesty and grateful before His Mercy.
